This post by Jess on "Frugal with a Flourish" asked for ideas on using galvanized items around the house...here's one of mine! I label galvanized cans with lids for "SUGAR", "FLOUR" and "OATS". I just tie on manilla shipping labels with gingham ribbon. Hardware and farm stores have great inexpensive galvanized items that are PERFECT for re-purposing as food, grain, linen and craft storage! We keep a BIG one with a lid on the back porch all winter, and use it as a "freezer" - it is critter-proof!

Master Gardener TIP # 2

HAPPY SPRING EQUINOX!
Finally feeling like spring here!
So here's my second seed-starting tip:
Mix clean sand or peat moss in with your potting mix for better drainage
for your seedlings. Better drainage will help prevent root rot and "damping off". You can start your seeds in almost anything, I like to use toilet paper tubes cut in half, and lined up in a tray. Empty washed yogurt containers make great "pots" for bigger seeds like squash and sunflowers.

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S!

Greetings everyone!
If you're IRISH, drink a cup,
If you're not, your luck is up!

IRISH BLESSINGS...ENJOY THEM! :)

May you always have walls for the winds,
a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,
and all your heart might desire.

Lucky stars above you,
Sunshine on your way,
Many friends to love you,
Joy in work and play-
Laughter to outweigh each care,
In your heart a song-
And gladness waiting everywhere
All your whole life long!

May you enjoy the four greatest blessings:
Honest work to occupy you.
A hearty appetite to sustain you.
A good woman to love you.
And a wink from the God above.

May God be with you and bless you.
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness.
From this day forward.

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour
before the devil knows you're dead.

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!
*******************************************
(Gotta love that one!) LOL

I have known many, liked not a few,
loved only one, I drink to you.

***

May you live as long as you want,
and never want as long as you live.

***

May the grass grow long
on the road to hell for want of use.

***

As you slide down the banisters of life
may the splinters never point the wrong way.

***

May your troubles be as few and as far apart
as my Grandmothers teeth.

***

May the roof above us never fall in,
and may we friends gathered below never fall out.

***

May there be a generation of children
on the children of your children.

***

May the Lord keep you in His hand
and never close His fist too tight.

***

May your neighbors respect you,
Trouble neglect you, The angels protect you,
And heaven accept you.

***

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,
may good luck pursue you each morning and night.

***

May the strength of three be in your journey.

***

In the New Year, may your right hand always
be stretched out in friendship and never in want.

***

Here's that we may always have a clean shirt,
a clean conscience, and a guinea in our pocket.

***

May I see you grey and combing your children's hair.

***

May your doctor never earn a dollar out of you
and may your heart never give out.
May the ten toes of your feet steer you clear
of all misfortune, and before you're much older,
may you hear much better toasts than this.

***

May you have the hindsight to know where you've been,
the foresight to know where you're going
and the insight to know when you're going too far.

***

May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings,
slow to make enemies, quick to make friends.
But rich or poor, quick or slow,
may you know nothing but happiness from this day foward.

***

May the frost never afflict your spuds.
May the outside leaves of your cabbage
always be free from worms.
May the crow never pick your haystack,
and may your donkey always be in foal.

***

May the sound of happy music,
And the lilt of Irish laughter,
fill your heart with gladness,
that stays forever after.

IN LIKE A....and Master Gardener TIP #1

SIGH...when will SPRING begin? Wake me up when it's here, please. Enough of the cold, wind, ice and sleet already! We have TINY TOMATOES that are defying Old Man Winter, though, and many more seedlings just breaking through and spreading their hopeful little leaves. I promised to post LOTS of gardening tips this spring ~ I've trained Master Gardeners and worked in greenhouses for many years, which means I can help you even if you have a BLACK THUMB! SO, here's my very first blog-posted MASTER GARDENER tip for you when planting seeds...

***WATER THEM IN WELL AT FIRST, AND KEEP THEM WARM!***

I place plastic wrap over the newly planted and watered pot tops to hold in moisture and keep them toasty. Just make sure the wrap doesn't touch the seedlings, and remove it after the seedlings have sprouted up, otherwise the plants could rot from TOO much moisture. After removing the wrap, water the pots from BELOW by adding water to a tray underneath the pot. It encourages the roots to grow downward and faster. You can also mist the seedlings with a spray bottle of water if the soil surface looks dry. This will keep them HYDRATED and HAPPY! I place trays of planted seeds on top of my refrigerator to germinate, it's warm up there, and once they sprout, I move them to sunny windowsills.

And if you have any gardening questions, JUST EMAIL and ASK! I've answered garden questions on allexperts.com, and at info booths at local farm markets. Here's my email: www.stackedstonefarm@yahoo.com

May your plantings be prosperous!
